This week the students will be taking the mid module test for Module 2. It was in the supply pick up bag. They will be taking it with me during our math black, but they may need extra time, which is fine with me. If your child asks for help, please guide them in the right direction without giving them the answers. When your child is finished, please drop it off at school. There is a box on a table in front of the cafeteria label 5th grade math tests. We would like these back no later than Wednesday. If this is not a possibility for you, please let me know and we can work something out.
We will also be finishing Wonder this week. In celebration, we will be hosting a virtual "Movie Day" so we can all watch the Wonder Movie "together!" This Friday afternoon, all 5th graders will log on to one Zoom meeting at 12:20, and we will screen share the movie to the group. This requires students to be on time (or early) please. I will post more information about the specific Zoom link closer to the date. This is completely optional, and if you would prefer to watch the movie as a family (or not at all) - that is perfectly fine. If you do decide to watch the movie as a family instead, please share some pictures with us!

This week is going to look a bit different since we are starting conferences. On Tuesday, I will be taking the day to prepare for conferences. I will still hold my morning meeting until 9:15, and then the students will get all their assignments on google classroom after that. They will be released on google classroom at the times they are supposed to be working on them, so they still should be following our schedule. Then starting Thursday, Oct 1 until Oct 9 we will have our morning meeting from 8:30-10, and then the students will have all their assignments on google classroom. This is when I will be doing conferences.
This week in class we will continue to read Wonder. Our focus is still on signposts, and I will be introducing character development. I have set up a new routine for writing that includes our writer's workshop lessons. Thanks to Ms. Schott for creating videos to go with this. Mondays and Wednesdays they will be doing writer's workshop lessons, and then Friday will be fun journal topics. Tuesday and Thursday there will be no writing assignments since they have PE. In science, we will be building atoms on Tuesday. At our last supply pick up they got a baggie of spice drops and toothpicks. They will need this Tuesday morning along with a blank piece of white construction paper, which was also given to them. In math, the students will be taking an end of module test on Tuesday. I would like them to take this on their own, but if they ask you for help you can lead them in the right direction!!! We will not begin the next module until after conferences. This week in math, we will be working on rounding and then doing a review on Thursday with a mid-point check in on Friday. I have noticed that some students are still struggling with multiplying decimals by 10, 100, 1000. We have also covered place value and comparing decimals. If you have time this week, please check in with your child to see how they are feeling about it.
Over the last couple of weeks, the students have learned and worked with notice and note signposts, somebody wanted but so then, and this week we will cover QAR questions. All of these Language Arts strategies can be found in the protocol packet that was given to you on supply pick up day if you want to learn more about them (or ask your child lol). As we head into a novel in the next couple of weeks, the students will be asked to use all these strategies. Reminder that we have a supply pickup on this Friday, Sept 11. We had a great week last week and the students have been keeping up with all their work. This week we will start our math program. On this website there are links to help with the math if needed. I will be trying different ways of delivering the math lessons, so bare with me as I explore these options. The first topic is all about place value.
In language arts, we will be exploring the signposts and practicing identifying them as well as knowing their importance. We will also be learning how to use 8 parts, which is a fun way to start to understand parts of speech. Have a great week! |
